When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Parties were the worst. They were terrible. So many people, so many feelings, so many things that he wanted to avoid. Add onto that a monkey suit with a tie that he couldn't tie properly. His grandmother had picked out a suit from his grandfather's closet that she thought he might look nice in. Which only tended to make him more uncomfortable because his grandfather was dead and he knew that when she saw him in it she would get sad and he couldn't imagine it. His mind was racing, he felt sick, he wanted Charlotte but she was getting ready and was already upset enough about the fact that she didn't think Max would show.
His door was open, he considered going down the hall to ask Will or Cassidy to help him, but he would feel silly asking his older brother or asking his girlfriend in front of him. He'd warmed up to Will, sure, but there was still that uneasiness between them. Miles knew that Will was keeping something buried, but he couldn't quite dig it out, nor did he think he wanted to. It was like the answer to all of his secrets and Miles wasn't ready for that yet.
So he stood there in his room and groaned as he fussed and fussed with his tie. How hard could it possibly be? After about ten minutes more, he pulled the tie from around his neck and threw himself back on his bed. It was useless. He was going to look like a child in front of everyone else. Perfect.
But I think I’ve found the light.

I love cheap thrills
I got all I need
One whole week with the Spencers had been eventful to say the least. First time meeting the hot uncle, first time meeting the hot brother, first time meeting the sweet grandma...it was like Spencer had a family with just very hot and sweet people. It also made her ache to be with Freya. She had wanted to call her baby sister but she didn't want to deal with talking to her parents first so she just sent a Christmas card addressed to Freya, hoping their parents won't intercept it.
Something was also happening to her and Miles that she can't quite explain. Having spent almost every waking moment with him made her appreciate his calming presence a lot more than she used to and it was a little peculiar that there was something else at the back of her mind just nagging at her whenever they were together.
The party finally arrived and after getting dressed in a beautiful red dress, with her hair styled into a messy yet elegant style, she decided to check on Miles to make sure he was ready for their entrance. She would have been perfectly fine going in with Charlotte but Evangeline had proved to be a bit of a matchmaker, which suited Spencer just fine. It would just be a tad awkward if it turned out that Miles didn't even like her in the first place.
Pushing those thoughts out of her mind, she passed by Miles' room and watched as he struggled with his tie. She only walked in when he threw himself on to his bed, defeated. "Nobody told you how to tie a tie?" She asked before tugging at his hand and pulling him up. She took the tie and circled it around his neck, adjusting it so one was longer than the other.
Concentrating on the tie, she tried not to make eye contact. This felt a little weird and Spencer didn't like feeling weird with someone she had known for such a long time. She also tried not to remember exactly why she knew how to do this.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles heard footsteps approaching his door, but he assumed it was just one of the maids or whatever they were called here. When he flopped back on his bed, the footsteps came closer and he finally glanced at who had come into his room. His body froze a bit when he saw Spencer. She was wearing the color that all of the girls had been told to wear and while he knew she'd pull off anything, it was still hard for him to stop staring. He took her hand and stood up, trying not to feel awkward. He'd spent so much time with her over the last week that he'd grown used to her, but it was still difficult masking how much he liked her.
The fact that his grandmother had paired them up for the announcement only made him more nervous.
"My hands won't stop shaking," Miles mumbled when she put the tie around his neck. Not that he knew how to tie a tie, but he figured he could get it if his hands weren't trembling so bad. Miles took a deep breath and looked up at the ceiling while she fixed his tie, "There's so many people...so many emotions to process all at once." He didn't know why he was saying all of that because typically he did okay at these kinds of events as long as he was with Charlotte. But that was where the problem lied, he didn't even know if she would come out of her room.
Miles cleared his throat and looked down at her, "You look really pretty."
But I think I’ve found the light.

His admission made Spencer finally able to look at him, her hands steady as she continued with his tie. She gave him a sympathetic smile before it turned into a full fledged one at his compliment. A hint of shyness hid beneath the smile as her cheeks reddened slightly.
Once she was done with his tie, she cupped his cheeks and looked him in the eye. "I'm no Charlotte but try to concentrate on me. Alright? I'm here for you." She paused and smiled at him. "I'm here with you." She took a deep breath and leaned up to press her lips on his forehead. "You're gonna be fine. We'll just...go to the bar or something."
Spencer ignored the heavy thuds of her heartbeat against her ribcage as she slipped her fingers through his and adjusted his tie a little. "Ready?"

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
The hovering emotions around Spencer were definitely easy enough to focus on. They were simple, sad, angry, but they were also perplexing because he couldn't understand what he'd done to make her feel that way. When he got her to smile though, he felt them both relax a little. And he was pretty sure that his face was reddening the same way hers had. God, he couldn't stop staring now.
She cupped his cheeks and his body's rigidness eased further. Physical contact was always a welcomed comfort and coming from her, it didn't make him quite as nervous anymore. Her lips pressed to his forehead and he took a deep breath. He didn't really know if he could say he was ready, but he felt better. And he had no idea how to tell her that she didn't have to be Charlotte to make him feel better. She did fine on her own.
Miles bit the inside of his cheek and squeezed her fingers, "Promise not to let me look dumb?" He glanced at her with a half-smile and nodded, "Yeah, let's uh, let's do this and get it over with so I can hopefully enjoy the rest of the night."
But I think I’ve found the light.

An undecipherable look passed Miles' face and Spencer wished she could read minds instead of detecting mutant abilities. She was beginning to realise that their proximity wasn't nearly enough for her. She was approaching a dangerous territory and she wasn't sure whether she liked it or not.
Miles' request snapped her back to the present and she gave a short laugh. "Only if you'd do the same for me. This announcement business...while it sounds awesome in theory, I'm not gonna lie, is making me panic a little." She tilted her head to the side as she imagined herself stumbling after being announced. "Jesus." She shook her head and pulled Miles closer, wrapping her free hand around the arm she was holding.
They walked out of his room and down to the hall where the announcement thankfully went smoothly and Spencer patted Miles' arm, looking up at him with a smile. "You're doing fine."

The announcement had been gut-twisting and nerve-wracking, but he liked hearing his name paired with Spencer's. It was a little amusing that they were Spencer and Spencer. With it finally over, he felt his whole body loosen up and he knew that the worst was over. Unless Spencer asked him to dance with her, in which case, that was his next obstacle he'd have to face.
Miles smiled and shrugged, "We both didn't do too bad, huh? Charlotte would have tripped me, I think, if it was us walking together. She's mean like that." He laughed and brushed a strand of hair that had fallen out of place in Spencer's eyes. "Thanks for not being like her in that regard."
He glanced around once his hand fell back to his side and he searched for his twin to see if he'd missed her. With a frown, he only found his uncle and his brother with their dates. "I'm worried about her, she wouldn't tell me what happened the other night, but she's been on edge all week and today...she won't even open her door."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Spencer chuckled at the image of Charlotte and Miles being announced together and another image popped into her head. "I probably would have done the same with her." She threw a teasing glance in his direction as they made their way across the hall.
She grabbed an appetiser from a wandering server and leaned against Miles when she heard his thanks. "Not with you, Miles." She responded, taking a cursory bite out of what looked like a bruschetta but ended up tasting like something completely different. It wasn't even bread but she definitely enjoyed it. "Ooh, you should try this." She held the appetiser up to Miles.
Miles' concern made Spencer squeeze his arm. "She's just worried Max won't show up. Which he will. She'll be fine, honey." Spencer stroked his arm up and down soothingly. "Hey, we've made our appearance, what do you say we get out of here? Get some fresh air away from all these people? Because the music's lame but I kinda wanna dance."

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
When she held the food up to him, he shook his head, "I'm good. But thank you." He kept looking around at everyone with their fancy get-up and noses in the air. He didn't feel like he belonged there, but Spencer looked like she did. He could picture her being doted on and dressed up regularly, but it all felt uncomfortable to him.
She squeezed his arm when he voiced his worries, but it only made him frown. Charlotte often told him everything and he wasn't sure what had changed that over the course of the trip. He glanced down at Spencer and nodded, "I just wish I could do something. I'm not really meant for pep talks about guys." That was obviously why she had Spencer.
The idea to find a better, less-crowded spot made him light up and he nodded. "There's a courtyard just down the hall. Looks pretty cool when it's all lit up and stuff," Miles shrugged. Of course it was kind of a romantic setting, but he doubted she would notice anything romantic when she was with him. He took her by the hand and glanced around to make sure his grandmother was nowhere to be found before pulling her down the hallway and out the door to the courtyard.
But I think I’ve found the light.

Spencer popped the rest of the appetiser in her mouth, making a little happy noise as she chewed. She had to keep a lookout for the appetisers again to ask what they were. At least the food was stopping her from overthinking this feeling she was having being this close to Miles. Taking a deep breath, she stopped walking and looked up at Miles with a sympathetic look on her face. "That's what she has me for. You've been her rock for so long, Miles. She probably just wants you to give yourself a break. You know...do a little dance, make a little love...get down tonight?" Spencer smirked, trying to lift Miles' spirits. There were things in the world that just didn't feel right; Miles being upset is one of them. Having him enthused about finding a quieter spot made Spencer smile. "Good, take me there. I've been here six days and I still don't know which way is up." She laced her fingers through his and let him lead her. Sure enough, the place was lit up and it was absolutely cool. Although, he seemed to have left out the part about it looking romantic as shit. Little lamp posts had been decorated with mistletoe through the walkway and Spencer couldn't help but grin at the sight. "You were right...it looks pretty damn cool." She bit her lower lip and let go of Miles' hand as she walked along the courtyard. Her hand traipsed over the railing that was covered with vines and little flowers and took a deep breath. It was a little chilly and goosebumps raised all over her bare shoulders and arms but she always liked the cold so she didn't quite mind. Spencer slipped her hand in the pocket of her dress to pull out her phone, finding the song she wanted and pressed the play button before placing the phone on the railing. She turned to Miles and held her hand out. "Come here." She gestured for him to come over.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
"I don't like feeling helpless anymore than she does," He pointed out. Because the odds were that if roles were reversed, which to be fair, they usually were, she would be forcing herself on him in order for him to talk. She may not have been able to help with his predicament because it was her best friend, but she at least offered some comfort in the fact that she knew Spencer didn't think he was disgusting. Miles hardly even knew Max. He shrugged, "I dunno. It's just frustrating, but I'm glad she has you."
Miles watched her face when they entered the courtyard. He could feel the chill against his face and he wondered if it would be weird to offer her his jacket. She didn't seem to mind the goosebumps that rose on her arms. He liked that she agreed with him and he released her hand so that she could explore a little further. Meanwhile, he kept his hands stuffed in his pockets because he wasn't sure what else to do with them.
She fished inside her dress and he realized that she had a pocket, which sort of baffled him, before he realized she was playing a song that wasn't 'lame.' Miles smiled and took her hand when she held it out, "I'm really terrible at dancing, I just want to warn you now." He laughed a little awkwardly and took his other hand out of his pocket. "Uh, where do I put my hands?" Because he could remember tv shows that always focused on the hand placement. They were not dating, they were just friends, so didn't that mean he should have it high up on her waist? He cleared his throat.
But I think I’ve found the light.

Spencer squeezed Miles' hands and released her breath, biting her lower lip. "I understand, Smiles." She responded. God knew how many times she felt frustrated and helpless because she couldn't help Freya when her baby sister needed it. "I can only help her so much. You know she still needs you most."
She was already swaying to the upbeat music when Miles finally got to her. "Please, I'm no Misty Copeland either." She shrugged and grabbed his hands, swinging them to the beat of the song. "You can put your hands anywhere, Miles. This isn't a ballroom dance." Spencer grinned as she turned so her back was to Miles and she pulled one of his arms to wrap around her stomach. She moved in a series of slides and turns, not really having much rhythm herself but she just wanted to move.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles had never been into any kind of dancing. He'd taken ballroom when he was visiting one summer, with Charlotte, but had never paid much attention. She'd loved it and would pinch him when he was zoning out, but even then it was hard to pick up the proper positioning. And then there was the upbeat dancing that went with the song that was playing and he sure as hell had no idea what to do to that. She placed his arm around her stomach and he stood there, not quite sure what to do with the rest of him.
He settled for watching her and taking in the comfort that he was receiving from her. The emotions that settled on the surface were clear and easy to absorb, nothing too unsettling or dark which was something he felt like he needed for the party. Something to take his mind off of the worrying. Eventually he began swaying with the music, but it wasn't enough to be all that noticeable.
Before he could really stop himself, he blurted out words that he immediately wanted to retract, "I'm really glad you're my date for the night, Spence."
But I think I’ve found the light.

As the chorus hit, Spencer started humming it as she pushed herself away from Miles. She started rolling her shoulders and throwing her arms around, just feeling the music.
She almost missed Miles' words. Almost. She stopped dancing and a smile spread across her face before she stepped into Miles' personal space and threw her arms around his neck. "Just for the night?" She asked before leaning in and kissing the corner of his lips. She pulled back slightly to look at him.
"You're a sweetheart, Smiles." She said before pursing her lips and using her thumb to rub the spot she had just kissed.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
She stopped dancing and he felt pretty stupid for saying anything. Spencer threw her arms around him and he couldn't even tell what expression was on his face in that moment. He couldn't feel his face. His eyes were wide and she kissed the corner of his lips after words that he was trying to decipher. He wished he and Charlotte had twin telepathy so that he could ask her what the hell he was supposed to say next.
Miles' hands rested hesitantly on her hips and he started to feel his face burning where she was touching him. "I...Spencer...I need to tell you something," Before he wimped out. Before she realized what she was doing and stopped. Before they went back to reality.
He took a deep breath and brushed her hair away from her face, "I uh, this is...uh...I really..." He shook his head and took another deep breath, "I like you. A lot."
But I think I’ve found the light.
